How To Blog For Business
Using a blog for business purposes, or to generate a supplemental and even full-time income is being realized by more and more people!
Blogs, short for weblogs, have been around for years. However, blogging is becoming more and more popular as people begin to use them as a social outlet to express themselves, their hobbies, or expertise in whatever topic they are blogging about.
For many, with what began as a hobby is turning into an extra source of income, and even a business for those who master the techniques in order to drive traffic and attract a large blogging audience.
Can a blog really be used to build a business?
Today, I read a very interesting article in Business Week titled, “Turning A Blog Into A Business.” This article was about a women by the name of Macala Wright, who began a blog in 2007 to explore how the fashion industry was being impacted by social media. This was a topic that was of interest to Macala, but no one else was discussing online.
When she began her blog, she had no idea that she would be able to monetize her blog and further more, use her blog for business purposes. After a couple of years, she was able to quit her day job and use her blog to launch a digital media consultancy firm in Los Angeles.
With what began as an investment of $500 to get started, her blog for business currently generates an income of $1,000 per month from the sale of advertising space.
Further more, using her blog for business has enabled her to generate $250,000 annually to support herself and her two employees in her up and coming digital media company.
Using a blog for business, or to generate an online income is dependent upon two factors!
Step 1
1. Writing quality content
Especially in the beginning, blogging is a daily activity if you wish for your blog to shine.
Attracting a large blogging audience and list of subscribers is dependent upon your ability to provide quality content of interest to your readers.
For your blog to become a huge success, you have to establish yourself as a leader in whatever niche you are blogging about. Without quality, no one will want to return to your blog!
Step 2
2. Keyword Research and SEO
Driving traffic and attracting a steady flow of daily visitors cannot be accomplished without the use of Keyword Research!
Keywords are the words or phrases that users type into the search engines when they are researching a particular subject or topic.
It is imperative to find quality keywords with relatively low competition and high traffic, and optimize your blog and posts with these keywords. If done effectively, your post will rank high in the organic (free) search results within the search engines.
You can write the most informative and entertaining post with all of the coolest photos and images, but if you are not effectively optimizing your post with keywords, your post will never receive the traffic that you are hoping for.
Simply put, keyword research is imperative to attract visitors, but quality content is required to gain a following of subscribers to keep your visitors coming back for more!
Its an ongoing effort…But fun too!
Keep in mind the saying of “quality is better than quantity.” I will agree with this statement, but it does take quantity over time to steadily grow your blogging audience and traffic.
Search engines favor blogs who provide updated content on a regular basis. So, don’t get started thinking that you are going to write 5 or 10 posts and be done. Building a blog for business purposes is an ongoing effort.
If you desire to create a blog for business, your first step is to find a niche or topic to blog about. Preferably a niche with low competition.
Write quality content to establish yourself as a leader.
Include quality keyword research so that your visitors can find your blog.
Do these activities daily, and your blog for business will become a huge success!

This is a question -hope you don’t mind, but since I’ve found this site so helpful I’m going to ask here first, and it is related of course to blogging. I’m attempting to promote my blogs through squidoo sites. These sites have adsense etc and I am not clear if those ads are for the lensmaster, i.e. me, or if the proceeds go to squidoo. Can anyone tell me how this works? The bottom of their page says;
This page and all the pages on Squidoo generate income for lensmasters and charities based on affiliate relationships with our partners, including Amazon, Google, eBay and others. Have fun
Hi Cathy,
By participating in the Squidoo CO-OP program, you will have the ability to earn compensation from Google Adsense, as well as affiliate commissions if you choose to feature products on your lens that are sold through companies like Amazon! In all cases, Squidoo will keep 50% of the revenues, and then pay the lensmaster the other 50%.
I hope that this helps!
